7 the Most Beautiful Attractions in the Central Slovakia: The Region of Banská Bystrica

Slovakia is a beautiful country and I cannot even count all the attractive and unique places worth a visit. The Central part of Slovakia has many of them, too, and according to the locals who live in and around the region of Banská Bystrica, these are the top 7 attractions or places that you should definitely put on your “must see” list while visiting Slovakia. Which one is your number one to visit ?

Abandoned Castle “Pustý hrad” in Zvolen

The largest castle in Slovakia was established on a site of an older fort, probably at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. Deserted Castle is a remain of the original castle, most of which was destroyed in the 15th century by an extensive fire.

 Monastery in Hronský Beňadik

Another great attraction you can´t miss is the Benedictine monastery in Hronský Beňadik in Žarnovica district. This was originally a medieval Benedictine abbey. Minster is one of the most important Gothic buildings in Slovakia.

Banská Štiavnica

Another wonder is hidden in Štiavnické hills,  near the Sitno mountain. It is the city of Banska Stiavnica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. City is known as the land of the miners and it is famous for gold and silver mining.

Čiernohronská railway

Situated in  the proximity of the city of Brezno, this  narrow-gauge forest railway used to have a total length of rails up to 131.98 km in the past. Nowadays, it serves tourists on the 15 km of preserved track only. It received its first award back in 1982 when it was declared a national cultural monument.

Špania Valley

It is a village with rich mining history situated closed to Banská Bystrica. Špania Valley is also known as Little Banská Štiavnica. The visitors can admire many historical buildings linked to the mining culture of the village.

Mint of Kremnica

Another wonder is the Mint of Kremnica in the region of Banská Bystrica which has minted coins since 1328. It is one of the oldest existing mint enterprises in Slovakia and in the world as well. You can find more information about the mint here.

Wooden Church in Hronsek

Wooden church and the Bell Tower in the village Hronsek were listed under the List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage as early as in July 2008. The church in Hronsek is made of solid oak and larch wood, built in the shape of a cross. The church has 5 entrances, around 1,100 places for seating and around 30 windows.

  1. Thanks! Right now, we have Bratislava, Ruzomberok, Vlkolinec, Strbske Pleso, a nice hike in the Mengusovská Valley to Velké Hincovo Pleso, and then Banska Stiavnica on the way south into Hungary. We will be driving and doing some hiking in various places. I’ve written down the places you mention in this post, as well as some others. Let me know if I’m missing anything really awesome!
